Oxford Workshops on Teaching Evidence-Based Medicine

The growth in the demand for knowledge about EBM has led to the instigation of a series of workshops, run by an international consortium of groups, including the Centre in Oxford and other groups, aimed at professionals who are interested in teaching EBM in an academic or clinical environment. The first UK workshop was run in summer of 1995; nine more have been run since.

If you are organising an EBH-related event, and would like to advertise on our site, please email Douglas Badenoch (douglas.badenoch@ndm.ox.ac.uk) with details.

The remainder of this page gives a brief outline of the format for the 2001 Oxford Workshop.

2001 Oxford Workshop on Teaching Evidence-Based Medicine

Oxford, 23rd-28th July, 2001

Who should attend the Workshop?

This workshop is aimed at clinicians and other health care professionals who already have some knowledge of critical appraisal and experience in the practice of evidence-based health care and who want to explore issues around teaching evidence-based medicine. The workshop is NOT intended to serve as an introduction to evidence-based medicine itself.

You should consider attending if you:

Workshop Themes

  1. Teaching will be addressed through the exploration of different educational models for teaching evidence-based medicine and identification and discussion of issues of pedagogy, curriculum design development and maintenance. The aim will be to promote the teaching of evidence-based health care at your home institution.
  2. Personal Development will be addressed by offering guidance and help in extending and advancing participants' existing critical appraisal and teaching skills.

Workshop format

Most of the Workshop will be conducted in small groups in which participants will develop and test their own EBM packages. Plenary sessions will present and discuss general issues in planning, executing, and evaluating EBM, and will demonstrate large-group strategies for teaching EBM. Searching and study time will be provided each day, and informal social events will encourage free discussion and the establishment of ongoing linkages and working groups.

Languages

While the plenary sessions will all be conducted in English, Spanish language small group sessions and searching training will be available. If you wish to take part in a Spanish speaking group, please let us know when you first apply.

Workshop materials and preparation

Participants will receive EBM packages in diagnosis, prognosis, therapy/prevention, quality of care, systematic reviews, and economic analysis. They will also receive appropriate background readings, a relevant textbook (such as How to Practice and Teach Evidence-Based Medicine) and software tools to help them practice and teach EBM.

The participants who will benefit most from the Workshop will be those who bring their own EBM packages ready for testing in simulated teaching situations.

Workshop facilitators

Workshop facilitators have been practising and teaching EBM at sites across the UK, Europe, and the Americas. The Workshop will be chaired by Dr Martin Dawes.

Cost

The fee for the Workshop is £950; details of accommodation will be made available soon.
